This is one of my favourite drawings using pens. In my opinion, using pen as a drawing tool is a lot more challenging than pencils or charcoal because once a line or shape is committed on a piece of paper, it's almost impossible to erase it by traditional rubber eraser. One has to work his way around that particular line to correct the wrong without having to resort to be using an eraser.

One of many ways to deal with any unwanted lines, shapes or mark on any pen drawings is by using searching lines. The lines are drawn thinly over and over until impression of correctness is achieved. This requires the artist to manipulate his pen in various ways so that the impressions on the paper varies in thickness, pressures, sizes etc. Once this basic skills has been mastered, one can starts to ventures into more complex techniques of producing lines/shapes.

Pen is basically more of a line tool rather than a shape tool if compared to watercolor, crayons, pastels, acryllic, oil paints etc. Admittedly we easily draw a shape using a pen, but if we need the shape to be spontaneous, fast and regular, we may opt to use a brush and paint as more effective tool.

The beauty of pen is that we can simply scribble any sort of ideas that come to our mind at a spur of a moment on a piece of paper, without having the hassle of preparing the media itself. Then whenever the mood inspire us to work the idea we can pick it up again and carry on the drawing to the next level.

For this drawing, I use pen of 0.5mm nip. Very fine and suitable for searching lines technique to get the simple composition, arranging the basic forms and relationships between several forms (proportion and proximity). Once the basic composition is achieved, i started to construct the sense of space by enhancing the foreground and gradually blurring the forms to the background.

Renderings are done using the same pen to give the drawing a sense of light, shadow, weight, mass, density, hollows and fills to eventually giving the mood to the drawing.

Basically this is a simple one pen exercise on a piece of paper. It can be done in one instant from start to finish or gradually whenever the inspiration strikes me to develop the basic further. It need to be reminded too that one has to know his limits; knows when to stop.

Tell me about the mood.
